
Background
Fire extinguishers are a portable fire suppression system that are meant to be used on small manageable fires by trained personnel. Not only is it a legal requirement to have suitable extinguishers in the building it is also an essential requirement that they are correctly maintained. Statistics show that 75% of fires are extinguished before the fire services arrive at the scene.
Since the introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order in 2006 employer’s have a ‘Duty of Care’ to appoint a ‘Responsible Person’ to carry out risk assessments of the building. This also includes looking after the service and maintenance of the fire extinguishers by a ‘Competent Contractor’
