We have achieved some notable achievements on our journey over the last few years. As the company has grown, we have undertaken large, complex projects such as British Airways Flight Training, UBS Bank and Great Ormond Street Hospital involving over 100,000 man-hours without a single RIDDOR incident.

Our ultimate goal here at Thameside Fire Protection is to work towards an integrated occupational quality, (ISO:9001) environmental (ISO14001) and occupational health and safety management system, that is certified.
The company has already achieved ISO:9001 and is investing significant resources in developing the environmental and OH&S systems over the next 12 months.

Health and Safety Policy

Our policy is designed in accordance with the requirements of BS OHSAS 18001:2008. This has been developed in response to customer demand for a recognisable occupational health and safety management system standard against which management systems can be assessed and certified, and for guidance on the implementation of such a standard.
The aim is to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for all our employees, and to provide such information, training and supervision as they need for this purpose. We also accept our responsibility for the health and safety of other people who may be affected by our activities.

Training

Call us today!
We have implemented a major training initiative involving staff at all levels. The training has included IOSH Managing Safely for all manager, SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) for first line supervisors, confined spaces and manual handling training courses for our service and maintenance teams, amongst others.

We have a policy of ensuring all of our engineers receive the necessary training and support to obtain the CSCS card for their discipline and we have a 95% compliance rate in this regard. We have also begun to implement occupational health medicals and surveillance for site based operatives and reviewing their health in order to encourage wellbeing in the workforce.

Risk and Method Statements

Thameside Fire Protection ensures that all work activities have a site - specific method statement and risk assessment prepared. All engineers and other site based workers receive a copy of both documents electronically and usually receive a hard copy on site. They also receive a site briefing on the contents and sign an acknowledgement slip confirming they are aware of the risks and hazards present in every workplace.

Method statements and risk assessments need to be sufficiently detailed and reviewed by a competent person in order to ensure they are current and are consistent with best practise. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 were introduced to reinforce the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The MHSWR places duties on employers and employees including those who are clients, designers, principal contractors or other contractors.

Health and Safety audits are performed on a regular basis by our independent occupational health, safety, quality and environmental consultants, Morgan Health & Safety Solutions Ltd. They have been working with us for over four years and have provided us with 24/7 support, advice and guidance as well as safety training. They specialise in construction and fire services which gives us value added support.

They have a wealth of experience in construction, fire and major projects and are currently providing Principle Designer services on one of our major projects involving water supplies, pumps, a water storage tank and an EFSR High Hazard racking installation near Canterbury, Kent.

Toolbox Talks

Toolbox Talks (TBT) are a short, sharp and an effective way to communicate important safety messages to our engineers in the field. We have a comprehensive TBT manual which covers just about every conceivable workplace hazard imaginable with do’s and don’ts and general safety information. All of our major projects have weekly TBT’s delivered and the whole business is now receiving them on a regular basis.

TBT’s also are an opportunity to feedback information on accidents, incidents, near-misses and dangerous occurrences as well as our achievements and successes. The engineers in the field are a key business resource and as they are rarely in the office or can be out-of-the-loop when it comes to these matters. TBT’s are an efficient way of communicating with the workforce without taking them off the front line. It also makes sure they receive valuable and important updates from time to time.

Thameside Fire Protection have recently teamed up with HS Direct to establish a new H&S portal. This makes all of our method statements, risk assessments, COSHH assessments, training records, toolbox talks and policies, accessible using smartphones, tablets and laptops as well as PC’s.

This enables the business to have a paperless H&S management system that puts access to information right in the hands of the user. It also saves a great deal in terms of environmental footprint by removing paper completely from the process. In addition, documents can be received, sent, revised and edited on the move electronically. Updates or changes can issued
